Novel Okra Polysaccharide Approach to
Inflammation Control for Dry Eye
by Beverly Hills Optometry (& Dr Scott Schachter ARVO paper)

Dry eye affects millions of people in the US and countless more worldwide. Despite its name, dry eye is due to an underlying inflammatory process that originates from the eyelid margin, a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction. It’s the chronic inflammation, similar to what occurs with a paper cut, that leads to the sensation of grittiness, tearing, blurry vision, and pain, which can severely affect work and daily activities.

There is no cure for dry eye and current treatments are limited by cost, side effects, and effectiveness. Artificial tears generally do not last for more than a few minutes. Some drugs like steroids and antibiotics produce too many negative side effects – glaucoma, diarrhea, light sensitivity. Other prescription drugs are costly and can take weeks to months to produce any improvements.

There is now a novel approach to dry eye that produces immediate and long-lasting dry eye relief using a natural okra-based polysaccharide approach for inflammation control.

In a study by Dr. Scott Schachter, 9 patients were treated with this okra-based technology called Zokrex and their subjective dry eye symptoms were assessed before and two hours after treatment. The results of this study were dramatic and statistically significant. The average SPEED score before treatment was 11.3, which indicates severe dry eye symptoms. After treatment, the SPEED score improved to 0.7, or minimal if any dry eye symptoms. Perhaps there’s more to okra than meets the eye.

How A Digital Retinal Photograph Saved My Father’s Life

How A Digital Retinal Photograph Saved My Father’s Life

About 5 years ago, my father and I were walking the halls of an eye care conference testing various ophthalmic equipment. One booth particularly caught our attention, a device that captured a high definition image of the retina and took an MRI-like image of the macula. While testing my father’s eyes, we noticed that he had small plaques scattered throughout his macula (called drusen), leading to a diagnosis of macular degeneration. I educated him on the importance of the risk factors: controlling blood pressure, wearing sunglasses, staying away from smokers, taking eye vitamins, etc. Since one of the risk factors for macular degeneration is hypertension, I checked his blood pressure and noticed it was significantly elevated. I immediately scheduled him an appointment to see a cardiologist. The cardiologist performed a few additional tests and discovered a 90% blockage in his coronary artery (aka the widow maker artery). This was particularly critical because my father was, up until this moment, quite active and healthy for most of his life. One of my fears was that he lived alone and would have a heart attack while swimming with no one present to rescue him. When he agreed to see a cardiothoracic surgeon, my family and I were relieved. The surgeon stressed the urgency and seriousness of having bypass surgery to prevent a pending heart attack. Fast forward 5 years later, my father had the successful bypass surgery, he feels more alive than ever, and his macular degeneration is still stable and controlled. We continue to monitor his retinal digital photographs and MRI-like images of his macula in our office. In fact, we have diagnosed and managed various eye and health conditions from eye cancer to diabetes to retinal detachments to glaucoma. With our state of the art technologies and routine screenings, we are able to prevent these sight and life threatening conditions with early detection even in healthy individuals.

Summer Eyewear (i.e. UV vs Polarized)

Summer Eyewear (i.e. UV vs Polarized)

To most, summer marks a time for vacations, flip flops, and quality time with family and friends. However, summer also signifies increased exposure to UV rays and sunlight. Sunlight produces UV light rays that are damaging to the eyes, potentially resulting in diseases such as photokeratitis, cataracts, pingueculae, or retinal damage. These rays are strongest between 10am and 2pm but are apparent throughout the day, even when overcast.

Therefore, the correct sunglasses should be used at all times and are imperative in retaining your eye health. An
Ultraviolet protected lens blocks these damaging rays from the sun from directly contacting the eye.

However, glare from the sun may continue to cause squinting on those bright summer days. Lenses with a general UV coating are best for use of minor outdoor excursions. However, a polarized lens is specific to sunglass lenses only and deters glare. This type of lens is best for outdoor activity and for time spent near water, snow, or other reflective surfaces. Having the right pair of sunglasses can prevent serious eye problems and eye straing (i.e. bothersome squinting).

When shopping for your next pair of sunglasses, remember to look for the options that best suit you. To find the perfect pair of summer lenses, please contact our office at 310-734- 3446 or visit our website http://www.bheyeguy.com.

Importance of Pediatric Eye Exams

Importance of Pediatric Eye Exams

Most parents concern themselves with their child’s pediatric visits but overlook the importance of their vision development. As a child grows, their vision is constantly changing. In their early months, babies focus only on close up objects and are primarily able to see high contrast colors, such as black, white, and red. Their visual acuity sharpens at six months and should have their vision examined at this time to ensure normal development and binocular function.

It is recommended that children receive several eye exams before starting school, around age three and again at five or six. Visual problems can negatively affect the child’s learning in school. If signs or symptoms or visual complaints are not addressed, a child may have a hard time focusing in the classroom or during during outdoor activities. Their inability to read text can result in poor academic performance and in turn may decrease their motivation for learning later in life. Symptoms of learning-related vision problems include headaches or eyestrain, short attention span for visual tasks such as identifying objects and reading, or poor hand eye coordination.
