School is officially back in Session!
There are many things to check off on your child’s back to school list, but does your list include an annual eye exam?
Most parents schedule their child’s annual pediatric and dentist appointments before school starts. Surprisingly, most parents don’t realize they should also bring their child in for an annual eye exam, even if their child doesn’t wear glasses. Why is this? Most parents think of the eye doctor as someone you go to only after you notice symptoms of vision conditions in your child. However, by the time you notice these symptoms, your child is probably already experiencing other side effects. By having a regular eye exam, you can catch these problems early on. Let’s start thinking of your eye doctor as a primary care physician that you should visit annually, just like your pediatrician or dentist.
The American Optometric Association (AOA) estimates that 1 in 4 children has a vision-related condition. Some common vision problems in young children are, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia or (farsightedness), amblyopia (lazy eye), and strabismus (the misalignment of eyes or commonly “crossed eyes”). It’s best to detect and correct these vision problems as early as possible while the child’s visual system is still developing. If these are left untreated, they can affect how your child performs in the classroom.
It is crucial to bring your child in for a comprehensive exam each year.
