Give your Child the Vision they Deserve

School Supply Checklist:
Backpack: Check.
Notebooks and pencils: Check.
Flu shot: Check.
Comprehensive eye exams: Schedule Today!
There’s no better time than Fall to have your child‘s eyes checked. As a parent or other family member, you may notice your little one holding their book too close, to the side, or not picking up the book at all. Uncorrected vision, an eye turn, or headaches related to sight may compromise your child’s school performance. Let’s not allow any eye conditions to go unnoticed. With an annual eye exam, we can help ensure your child’s eyes develop properly and efficiently.
I’m reminded of a story about concerned parents of a 4 year old girl who presented at our office. The mother mentioned that her daughter, who was once eager to learn, now seemed disinterested in school. After initial testing, I realized the bright, young girl needed eyeglasses in order to see the small shapes and letters on the acuity chart. With the help of her parents and my staff, we made the experience of choosing glasses fun and enjoyable and she was thrilled to ’look like her dad.’ Two weeks following her office visit, the father shared a touching car ride with his daughter who yelled, “Daddy, daddy I can see the leaves of the trees, it’s not a green blob. There‘s leaves!” Children are not aware of the difference between clear and fuzzy until we help them distinguish the two.
According to Prevent Blindness America, one in four school-aged children have vision problems that, if left untreated, can affect learning ability, personality, and adjustment in school. At Beverly Hills Optometry, we are committed to giving our patients, whether adult or child, personalized care tailored to their needs.

Do you have pink eye [also called conjunctivitis]?

Do You Have Pink Eye [also called conjunctivitis]?
By Dr Kambiz Silani

Pink eye is prevalent among patients of all ages; however, not all pink eyes are created equally. There are three common forms of acute conjunctivitis [otherwise known as sudden onset pink eye], which include: (i) allergic, (ii) bacterial, and (iii) viral conjunctivitis.

The first form is allergic conjunctivitis, which usually appears as red, glossy eyes in young patients -- especially during the spring and summer motnhs. As a parent, if you notice your child rubbing his or her eyes, seek the care of your optometrist for medical treatment. Other symptoms to look out for include watery eyes or watery discharge. Common allergens include cosmetics, dust/pollen, contact lens overwear, or even food allergies, For chronic allergies, your eyecare professional may recommend an allergist to identify and eliminate the cause.

Bacterial conjunctivitis, the second form, typically presents as a red, swollen eye with white-yellow mucus. Patients may notice slight to moderate itchiness with bacterial conjunctivitis; however, the allergic or viral forms tends to cause severe itchiness. With the appropriate antibiotic treatment, the symptoms should resolve within a few days to a week.

The third form -- or viral conjunctivitis -- is highly contagious when active. This form often starts after a recent upper respiratory tract infection or being in close contact with someone who is sick. Be cautious of individuals with an angry, red eye that may involve the fellow eye within a few days. Symptoms include itchy eyes, watery eyes and stuck eyelashes. Patients with viral conjunctivitis should adhere to washing their hands frequently and avoid touching their eyes. Common treatments include preservative-free artificial tears, cool compress, and rarely steroid eyedrops -- if vision is reduced.

You don't have to deal with a pink eye on your own. The earlier you get checked, the sooner you can get back to your usual routine and not hide behind sunglasses indoors.

The Summer's 4 Hottest Sunglass Trends!

The Summer's 4 Hottest Sunglass Trends!
By Dr Kambiz Silani

At Beverly Hills Optometry, we think nothing quite finishes a look like a great pair sunglasses. We are of the complete belief that a complete sunnies wardrobe is a necessity. We paired with Super Vision Optical to take a look at this season’s four hottest trends. Whatever your style or budget we have the sunglasses for you.

1) Mirrored Lenses: This is the ultimate in hiding behind your shades look, thanks to ultra-reflective lenses. The mirrored look adds a dash of tough-guy cool instantly. The Rayban aviator with mirrored green, blue, red or gold lenses is the summer’s must-have sunglasses of the season!

2) Clubmaster: It's a classic borrowed-from-the-boys silhouette and goes hand in hand with this season's minimalist take on styling. While these look great with casual looks like shorts and t-shirts, they also look great paired with a sleek dress for a street-style appeal. Check out the Tom Ford clubmaster for a timeless look!

3) Round: These classic frames were of course made stylish by John Lennon, and if you want to channel his look then definitely stick to metal frames. But if you want something a little more up-to-date, plastic frames are definitely the way to go. Check out the bold looks from Prada!

4) Cat-eye: These retro-inspired frames are actually flattering on a wide variety of face shapes, making them an easy pick. And while they are hot right now, they are classic enough to justify an investment. Try on the dramatic looks from Dolce & Gabbana!
