In our daily lives, there are many different sources of light that reach our eyes. Sources such as UV rays from the sun to the light that comes off of our phone, television and computer screens, continuously transmit different wavelengths of light to our eyes.
We are constantly reminded how important it is to have UV protection to protect our eyes from UV rays that can severely damage the composition and function of our eyes. Recent studies also show how important it is to have protection from high energy visible (HEV) light. High energy light, also called "blue light", is defined as the part of the visible spectrum that has short wavelengths around 390-500 mm. Some of this blue light is beneficial to help maintain our sleep cycle. However, too much blue light can cause excessive eye strain and may be a risk for permanent damage to our eyes by causing premature aging of the retina.
Risk factors for exposure to HEV include exposure to highly reflective surfaces such as sand and snow, certain medications, and frequent computer and/or screen usage. To help alleviate this additional stress to the eyes, there are now HEV blockers available as a coating on lenses to decrease the amount of HEV that reaches the eye. This ultimately helps protect the retina from eye strain by blocking harmful blue light, while still allowing beneficial blue light to reach the eye.
At Beverly Hills Optometry, we advise and offer the latest in Blue Light protection lenses. These lenses are extremely beneficial for individuals today to help prevent potential eye diseases and alleviate eye strain from today's constant computer, phone and screen usage.
